Plays for Schools

The Necessary Stage has been at the forefront of youth arts education since 1992. In 20 years, the company has created numerous plays which have toured primary and secondary schools. Six of these plays can be found in this brand new collection.

Award-winning playwright Haresh Sharma has created stories and characters that will entertain, delight and surprise the reader. The plays include contemporary adaptations such as Hamlet, Such Sweet Sorrow (based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet), What Big Bombs You Have (based on Little Red Riding Hood) and Ah Boy & the Beanstalk (adapted from Jack and the Beanstalk). The collection also includes the hugely entertaining History, Whose Story? and Survivor Singapore.

Plays for School contains notes on the plays by the writer as well as an introduction by Alvin Tan.

Inspired by the title of a poem by Australian writer Henry Lawson, Past Caring is an inter-disciplinary theatrical collaboration involving artists from Singapore and Australia. Urgent issues of adoption, displacement, family, land and journey will be weaved together into a complex and contemporary presentation of text, music, multimedia and movement. In a year-long process, the project involved artists making field trips, conducting interviews and creating and presenting nascent works in Singapore and Melbourne.

Mark is nervous. He has had unprotected sex, during one night of abandonment. Mark is very nervous. He is married, and his wife does not know about his indiscretion. As he confides in his best friend, he relieves that faithful night. Will he be strong enough to go for a HIV test? Will he be stronger and confess to his wife? Mark may not be able to find the right path without the help of the audience.
