Following the successful launch of Shorts I, The Necessary Stage presents Shorts II, the second installment of short plays by award-winning Singapore playwright Haresh Sharma.

This collection of 8 plays includes some of Sharma’s best and most popular early works, including godeatgod which have been performed to rave reviews both locally and internationally. 3 other plays, untitled women number one, untitled cow number one and Koan have also been performed at international festivals.

For 6 of the 8 plays, this will be their first appearance in print.

The collection also contains an introduction by Alvin Tan as well as notes to each play by Sharma.

This collection of 6 plays contains some of Sharma’s best and most popular early works. 3 of them, Lanterns Never Go Out, Still Building and More have been published in a previous collection, but which is no longer available.

The other 3 plays, Hope, Talk I and Talk II have never been published before.

Ian is picked on a bulled in school. One day, he tells his classmates that they should leave him alone because he is special. Because he has a secret power: to walk on barren soil and make it flower again at his feet. No one believes him, of course. It's all just make-belief, they say. He doesn't think so. He doesn't want it to be so.

CPL Cheong has just been shot in the belly at the firing range: in his last moments of his life, he tells the audience his story. He has been pregnant with a child of unknown origin since BMP, or so he believes. Despite the sensible advice of his army buddy and his government prostitute imaginary friend, he attempts to destroy the foetus by various means, including visits to the Medical Centre and a fall from the roof of the Accoms block (which earns him a medical downgrade). Eventually, Cheong learns to live with his pregnancy until, when approaching ORD, he realises the child may survive him and shoots himself.
