The Necessary Stage’s Theatre For Seniors programme was launched on 14 April 2008, with 50 participants.

Term 1 covered basic acting, dance and improvisation skills. This concluded with a mini-showing on the last session

Term 2 covered theatre design, dance, storytelling and history of Singapore theatre. This concluded with a mini-showing on the last session.

Term 3 covered storytelling, social dance and history of Singapore theatre.

Term 4 featured rehearsals for Encore: An Evening of Ageless Theatre.

Theatre for Seniors is a 3-year programme for participants aged 50 and above launched in April 2008 by The Necessary Stage's Artistic Director Alvin Tan, and facilitated by Jean Ng, Julius Foo and Jalyn Han.

This innovative initiative was designed to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge in drama and in various aspects of theatre, including acting, playwriting and directing, as well as administration and technical work.

The groundbreaking programme provides seniors an avenue to impart their personal stories and adds a new spectrum of looking at their life-history and cultural identity. The programme's end-of-first-year presentation Encore: An Evening of Ageless Theatre was staged at the Marine Parade Community Club Theatrette in March 2009.

Term 1 covered playwrighting.
Term 2 covered lighting (chinese group) and Voice work (english group)
Term 3 and 4 featured rehearsals for Encore II: Heartland, Heartland! (201003)

Term 1 featured a Directing Workshop.
Term 2 featured a Stage Management Workshop and independent group creation.
Term 3 and 4 consisted of Rehearsals for Encore III: Family Knots.

Theatre For Seniors Workshop for Senior Trainers is a trainer's workshop focusing on the pedagogy of teaching basic acting skills to seniors. It aims to have trained senior facilitators run their own basic acting workshops for their own pool of senior clients.

The programme is specially tailored for seniors who have undergone the Theatre for Seniors programme, expanding their skill sets beyond theatre making. Participants will be required to conduct 50 hours worth of on-site training with a select group of seniors before graduating from the course

The Necessary Stage’s Theatre for Seniors (TFS), in collaboration with NTUC ULive, presents a theatre workshop target at senior citizens. With a vigorous and comprehensive curriculum covering a wide range of topics and genres, graduates of the workshop will experience first-hand the process of creating and performing their own theatrical piece.

The theatre workshop features a curriculum grounded in performance training. With the inclusion of disciplines such as music and movement in the curriculum, graduates will also be well-rounded performers in the increasingly multidisciplinary live arts landscape.

30 participants will be able to try their hand at playwriting, and also learn the basics behind production management. They will have the opportunity to observe, interact with and learn from industry professionals and experts of various disciplines.

Graduates of the programme will be well-equipped to embark on their journey with theatre, accompanied with a strong grounding in the core elements which goes into creating a performance.

Join us this November 2013 for a 6-session introductory course into Forum Theatre, conducted by The Necessary Stage’s Founder and Artistic Director, Alvin Tan!  Learn about, create and facilitate a Forum Theatre piece together with your fellow participants.

Created by Augusto Boal, the form empowers the audience member to personally enact changes they would like to see in the presented performance. The form creates a safe space where audiences can test out solutions they think will help resolve the problems presented on stage. Awaken the actor within you and join us for The Necessary Stage’s Theatre for Seniors Acting Workshop! This workshop is targeted at participants aged 50 and above, with a keen interest in theatre and acting

Led by experienced theatre practitioner Julius Foo, this workshop will introduce seniors to the basic elements of acting, character and scene creation as well as working with text. With a vigorous and comprehensive curriculum, graduates of the workshop will experience first-hand the process of creating and performing their own theatrical pieces.
