Dreaming up a Prince

The dating game can be alluring, exciting and romantic for many teenagers. However, there are other issues that come with relationships, some of which do not cross the minds of impulsive teenagers, especially when it comes to sex. This play introduces to students the notion of trust in relationships with the opposite sex, and possible consequences when that trust is broken. It deals with the influence of peer pressure and the media and aims to encourage students to reflect on dating at their age and whether they are ready and prepared for what it really entails.

Development Through Drama: Towards Providing A Holistic Education in Singapore Schools was published by The Necessary Stage with support from the National Arts Council, documenting its pilot developmental drama programme conducted during curriculum time.

Development Through Drama

Development Through Drama is a programme that uses drama as a tool to teach students life-skills such as social interaction, communication, expression, creativity and thinking.

A pilot programme, Development Through Drama started in late January 1999 at Mayflower Primary School, and in July 1999 at St. Anthony’s Canossian Secondary School. In 2000, the programme continued for a second year at Mayflower Primary School, with 3 new schools – Yio Chu Kang Primary, East View Secondary, and Cedar Girls’ Secondary – coming on board, as well as Boy’s Town Singapore. 2001 sees us continuing the programme at the same schools as the previous year except Yio Chu Kang Primary and Boys’ Town. 

The programme takes place during curriculum time and lasts for three terms to a whole year and is conducted by actor-facilitators employed by the company.  In some schools, the programme forms part of the English language syllabus and the students’ assessment forms part of their exam grade.

The Branch has also conducted a documentation and evaluation process of the pilot programme at Mayflower Primary and has produced a report entitled, Development Through Drama – Towards Providing A Holistic Education in Singapore Schools.

Talks & Interviews

Development Through Drama

A series of focus group meetings with teachers, parents, community workers and theatre practitioners to discuss issues related to the implementation of drama in the school curriculum. The focus groups culminated into a roundtable discussion and contributed to a symposium titled Creativity Through Drama: The Potential of Drama in the Singapore Classroom.

However, there is one living witness to the crime- David, an almost regular P.I. Magnum, except that he has lived life. Only David could expose Ronald's "perfidious crime." The scene opens at a cocktail party where Ronald has gone intending to kill David. In the process, the drama of Madam and Jinkee married life unfolds...
