Interculturality and Interdisciplinarity

The iMagination Center is dedicated to imagination, innovation and transdisciplinarity. It aims at training current and future managers to understand today's world in motion while making them actors of the world to build for tomorrow.

 iMagination Week is a seminar dedicated to imagination, creativity and transdisciplinarity.

The objective is to culturally enrich the students by taking them out of their usual work habit and exposing them to experts from various disciplines like life sciences, future studies, art, technology, and sciences, among others. It is also to invite the students to envision the future and develop their creative minds by stimulating their imagination and team work capabilities.

Abuse Suxxx!!! and Other Plays

Featuring five plays by Cultural Medallion recipient Haresh Sharma, created over a span of two decades, Abuse Suxxx!!! and Other Plays is an audacious collection that casts a spotlight on LGBT lives and issues explored in The Necessary Stage’s productions. Yet these plays go beyond being simply out, loud and proud. Rather, they deal with a range of topics—from dealing with death in Top or Bottom, to fissures within the community in Mardi Gras, to examining the limits of liberal ideals in ________ Can Change—and advocate tolerance and acceptance of difference in our midst.

The collection also includes a foreword by Artistic Director Alvin Tan and an introduction by researcher Shawn Chua.

Le travail de Marc Goldberg contribue à combler ce manque, en faisant découvrir au public francophone une expression théâtrale typiquement singapourienne, et ancrée dans des questions contemporaines.

Rise of the Phoenix

As part of Esplanade’s A Date With Friends, Rise of the Phonex is a doublebill of plays that is 75 minutes doublebill of plays involving themes which will resonate with the senior audiences and families.

The first play, Waste, is directed by Senior Associate Thomas Lim working with local playwright, Faith Ng.

The second play, Lost, is written by our Senior Associate Eleanor Song and directed by Peter Sau.

The Necessary Stage

Alvin Tan will share his experiences on the effective use of community theatre. He will discuss ​The Necessary Stage's devising and collaborative methodology, using some plays to illustrate how The Necessary Stage negotiates​ multiple cultural sensibilities, and the need to educate themselves before embarking on the artistic journey of theatre-making.

One of the plays include Off Centre, a play on mental illness and the field research conducted during the process of creating the work. Another play, Completely With/Out Character, is about Paddy Chew, the first Singaporean who came out with his HIV status. Paddy had approached The Necessary Stage to create a play about living with HIV in Singapore, and it took a year to interview and prepare him for the stage.

Other international collaborations such as Mobile and Mobile 2: Flat Cities, involve multiple partners from Japan, Thailand and the Philippines, showcases The Necessary Stage's application of an intercultural approach that has ​its genesis from working in multicultural Singapore for twenty-seven years.

The Orange Playground Lab #2

Created by Artistic Director Alvin Tan, The Orange Playground (TOP) is The Necessary Stage’s newest initiative in creative research and development. We seek to collaborate with artists in an exploratory environment where risks can be freely taken within and with the creative process. TOP will provide opportunities for free, ad-hoc collaborative “jamming” and play with emerging and established talents.

In this Lab, a new ensemble experiments with set design, sonic elements and text.
