WORK/PLAY

The following description was extracted from the Introduction in focas Vol. 3 by Editor Lucy Davis.

The forum had grown out of two recent developments in the arts community. The first was a search for a language of practice. For some time now, various members of the arts community have felt that arts practice is increasingly overlooked for the sake of arts production. These attitudes, in turn, have lead to a tendency by some practitioners to essentialise their practice in a defensive response to allegedly product-focused arts funders and arts commentators. The second development that inspired the Work/Play forum was the oft-heard refrain, "Making Art isn't Fun Anymore", and the pressure on cultural production and practice to become more and more like other rationalised industries. This rationalisation of the arts finds expression in the ever-increasing application of productivity measures, including such quantitative "performance indicators" as the number of productions per company or per artist, per year, and audience per funded dollar.

The Death and Rebirth of the Playwright

The following description was extracted from the Introduction in focas Vol. 3 by Editor Lucy Davis.

The title of this forum is The Death and Rebirth of the Playwright. We came up with this title for different reasons, one being that, in the Singapore context at least, the playwriting scene is very young. There were attempts at writing plays and plays were staged in the 1960s and 1970s, but it as only in the 1980s when English language theatre started to blossom. There have been a number of playwrights from my (Haresh Sharma) generation in the 1980s but sadly there haven't been that many young playwrights who have come onto the scene. On top of this, there was a phase of very director-led theatre or post-modern theatre, where it was almost as if there wasn't a need for playwrights anymore.

I want it and I want it now!

This play seeks to explore teenagers' attitude of wanting immediate gratification, materialism, affluence and lack of personal identity leading them to join gangs, etc. Through this play, students will be shown reflections of themselves, and the possible causes of their behaviours and attitudes. Through self-parody & identification, it is hoped that students will then be encouraged to reflect on their own values and attitudes.
