Never the Bride

Three queer Singaporean men cast a little gay spell, don their bridal veils, and embark on a whirlwind journey towards matrimony. They dream through the past, the present and an imagined future to discover what a big, fat, fabulously gay wedding would look like for them!

In a country where the legal right to marriage is denied to the queer community, these individuals navigate the political, social, cultural, and personal reality of their lives, along with saying “yes” to whimsical wedding fantasies. “Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.” Is that the ultimate ultimatum, or is there a possible way to find marital bliss amidst the chaos?

Devised and performed by Ryan Ang, Fadhil Daud and Rajkumar Thiagaras, Never the Bride was first created and presented at the Devising with Actors and Playwrights programme as part of The Necessary Stage’s Devising Platform in 2021.

Neigbours Will Talk

The performances of short skits will be directed by our Senior Associates and performed by Theatre for Seniors (TFS) members. These skits, most of which are written and/or devised by the seniors, originated from the TFS Encore series.

The four selected skits will be presented in a 30-minute performance.

Negotiating Translation

Haresh delivered a keynote presentation titled Negotiating Translation: Case Studies of Multilingual Playwriting and Theatre-making at the 2013 Australasian Association for Theatre, Drama and Performance Studies (ADSA) conference Staging Changes: Translation as Innovation and Intervention.

There were individual presentations, panels, workshops and performances that explored translation in theatre, drama and performance as pivotal to innovation and intervention. Translating or adapting a work from another culture, or transposing a piece from one medium to another, has traditionally reflected how we imagine and represent unifying identities: cultural, national, regional, ethnic, or linguistic. However, these practices also allow us to stage change by historicising, localising and interpreting individual and communal experiences in a multicultural setting.

To promote a dialogue between creative practice and critical reflection, this conference considered the opportunities translation and adaptation present for creating and disrupting collective identities, and for diversifying mainstream audiences and performance practices. The conference interrogated both the possibility and impossibility of translation, its achievements and failures in (re)ordering and (dis)locating individual and collective desires and destinies.

Beyond the make-up, costumes and jokes, do we really know who Kumar is? He has committed his entire life to bringing the alternative, the politically incorrect (some may even add vulgar) into the mainstream. The Necessary Stage now provides a platform for the real Kumar to surface presenting Kumar's life, childhood, family, on being Indian, career and living in Singapore. Who would have known that beneath the lashes, sequins and feathers is an intelligent, kind even tender Indian gentleman.

Naga Mandala

A Theatre-In-Education piece created and directed by directors Andrew Koh and Julius Foo, The Bridge draws elements from familiar myths recreating a small town where tradition is threatened by technology. The use of an ancient tale allows creative distance where students are more willing to participate and appreciate. Land that has traditional significance for the town is threatened when a neighbouring city decides to build a road through it. Under the guidance of experienced actor-facilitators, students role-playing as town citizens and city dwellers attempt to resolve the conflict between progress and preservation. This exercise encourages students to examine values, social needs and self-expression.
