A foreign journalist is taken to task after writing some objectionable articles. A university exchange student tries to organise a forum on campus and encounters obstacles. The lives of these unlikely individuals meet and intertwine in The Necessary Stage's latest production. Characters clash, tensions run high, and truth is questioned. Can we turn back time and return to a harmonious past? Who is allowed to speak out for what they believe? Do we welcome the views of foreigners? Or should they Balek Kampong?

A man stabs an MP at a Meet the People Session. But this is not their story.

It is the story of the man's girlfriend, an Indonesian maid who wants to get married and become a Singapore citizen. It is the story of the MP's wife, who tries to cope with her husband's injury and the media spotlight. It is the story of the maid's employer, who is also struggling with her own tragedy.

These three women may mean nothing to each other, but they need one another to survive.

The maid, the employer and the MP's wife. Are they all Model Citizens?

Director Alvin Tan and Playwright Haresh Sharma, who have been working together for more than two decades, return with another original, thought-provoking work. Model Citizens features theatre stalwarts Goh Guat Kian, Siti Khalijah and Karen Tan.

Theatre For Youth and Community 2011

In September 1992, Alvin Tan, Artistic Director of The Necessary Stage, established the Theatre For Youth Branch. The Branch was re-named Theatre for Youth and Community in 2002, our 10th anniversary year.

The aims of our Youth Drama Programmes are to:


expose young people to theatre
create a space for artistic expression by and for young people
cultivate the aesthetic sensibilities of young people
explore themes and issues relevant to young people in Singapore


We believe that theatre must grow out of the community and therefore pay close attention to issues that concern young people and educators. Our programmes develop from research, careful planning and consultation.

Our programmes are relevant and involve theoretical and hands-on learning: cultivating students' life skills towards their personal development.

We also believe strongly in partnerships with other sectors in society to achieve holistic outcomes for our programmes. The school's curriculum and directions in education are also taken into consideration when planning our programmes.

Theatre is not meant to be simply a high-brow affair for the wealthy and intellectual. It is a language that each of us have the right to learn and speak, in order to find release, and to make meaning of our world.

Shorts 2

Following the successful launch of Shorts I, The Necessary Stage presents Shorts II, the second installment of short plays by award-winning Singapore playwright Haresh Sharma.

This collection of 8 plays includes some of Sharma’s best and most popular early works, including godeatgod which have been performed to rave reviews both locally and internationally. 3 other plays, untitled women number one, untitled cow number one and Koan have also been performed at international festivals.

For 6 of the 8 plays, this will be their first appearance in print.

The collection also contains an introduction by Alvin Tan as well as notes to each play by Sharma.

Theatre For Seniors Interest Group

Theatre For Seniors Interest Group (TFSIG) is run by seniors for seniors, to nurture the creative talents of seniors, enriching the quality of life and opening up possibilities for seniors.

TFSIG aims to achieve the above-mentioned vision by creating and performing plays and organisting various theatrical programmes through partnership with The Necessary Stage (TNS).

TFSIG will draw from their Encore repertoire whilst creating new works amongst themselves, with guidance from The Necessary Stage and/or from theatre practitioners from the arts community.

TFSIG plans to tour their plays to VWOs, non-profit organisations, underprivileged homes and District Arts Festivals (CDC) to achieve its outreach vision.
