Those Who Can't, Teach is a classic of the Necessary Stage, first staged in 1990 as part of the Opening of The Substation. 20 years later, the original creative team of Director Alvin Tan and playwright Haresh Sharma will revisit, revive and revamp the play into a contemporary classic. Set in the backdrop of a secondary school, the play looks at the madcap lives of teachers and students, with often hilarious results. As the teachers struggle daily to 'nurture and groom', the students prefer to hang out and chillax. In the meantime, they all have to deal with the dreaded 'parents'. With upskirting and facebooking, teaching and politicking, school has never been the same. Join the colorful cast of characters as they struggle to prove that Those Who CAN, Teach.

Those Who Can’t, Teach turns the spotlight on the madcap lives of teachers and students in a typical secondary school in Singapore. As the teachers struggle daily to nurture and groom, the students prefer to hang out and “chillax”. With upskirting and Facebooking, griping and politicking, school takes on a whole new meaning as the colourful characters struggle to prove that those who can, teach.

Written by Singapore’s most prolific playwright Haresh Sharma, Those Who Can’t, Teach was first staged by The Necessary Stage in 1990 to critical acclaim. Twenty years later, Sharma revisits this classic to revitalise it for the Singapore Arts Festival 2010, transforming it into a powerful portrayal of the pressures and challenges facing teachers (and students) in schools in the 21st century.

The scripting of the Singapore Story goes beyond the state-dictated narrative as described by certain observers. Rather, the real challenge in such a process is getting young Singaporeans interested and involved.

Theatre for Seniors Year 3

Theatre for Seniors is a 3-year programme for participants aged 50 and above launched in April 2008 by The Necessary Stage's Artistic Director Alvin Tan, and facilitated by Jean Ng, Julius Foo and Jalyn Han.

This innovative initiative was designed to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge in drama and in various aspects of theatre, including acting, playwriting and directing, as well as administration and technical work.

The groundbreaking programme provides seniors an avenue to impart their personal stories and adds a new spectrum of looking at their life-history and cultural identity. The programme's end-of-first-year presentation Encore: An Evening of Ageless Theatre and Encore II: Heartland! Heartland!  was staged at the Marine Parade Community Club Theatrette in March 2009 and 2010 respectively. This year's Encore III: Family Knots marks the end of the 3-year programme.

Term 1 featured a Directing Workshop.
Term 2 featured a Stage Management Workshop and independent group creation.
Term 3 and 4 consisted of Rehearsals for Encore III: Family Knots.
