Ryan, Farah and Wee Kiat are best friends in school. When the principal assigns them a special project to explore and research Singapore's maritime industry, they take it in their stride. However, they later discover they have to make a presentation to the whole school. Can they rise up to the challenge? Will their friendship be tested by THE PROJECT?

Theatre For Youth and Community 2013

In September 1992, Artistic Director of The Necessary Stage Alvin Tan established the Theatre for Youth Branch, which was later renamed in 2002 as Theatre for Youth and Community (TFYC) Branch.

Since our inception, TFYC has reached to more than 1,000,000 students through school assemblies, interactive Theatre-in-Education programmes, customised workshops and process-based drama programmes. TFYC has also been featured in Esplanade's Feed Your Imagination series as part of the National Arts Council's Arts Excursion Programme, offering high quality, thought-provoking productions that provide students an all-rounded educational theatre experience.

Under the TFYC Branch, we have also embarked on successful partnerships with corporations, non-governmental organisations, statutory boards and government ministries to present works dealing with specific issues to the public.

From 2008-2011, the Company also launched the Theatre For Seniors, a programme geared towards training participants in various aspects of theatre-making. The project was supported by the Council for 3rd Age, Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple and the National Arts Council.

We believe that theatre must grow out of the community, and therefore pay close attention to issues that concern young people and education. Our programmes are developed from research, detailed planning and consultation because we believe that students can benefit fully through programmes that are relevant to their lives, and which involve theoretical and hands-on learning.

We believe that theatre is not meant to be simply a high-brow affair for the wealthy and intellectual - it is a language that each of us have the right to learn and speak, in order to release and to make sense of the world.

Theatre For Youth and Community 2012

In September 1992, Alvin Tan, Artistic Director of The Necessary Stage, established the Theatre For Youth Branch. The Branch was re-named Theatre for Youth and Community in 2002, our 10th anniversary year.

The aims of our Youth Drama Programmes are to:


expose young people to theatre
create a space for artistic expression by and for young people
cultivate the aesthetic sensibilities of young people
explore themes and issues relevant to young people in Singapore


We believe that theatre must grow out of the community and therefore pay close attention to issues that concern young people and educators. Our programmes develop from research, careful planning and consultation.

Our programmes are relevant and involve theoretical and hands-on learning: cultivating students' life skills towards their personal development.

We also believe strongly in partnerships with other sectors in society to achieve holistic outcomes for our programmes. The school's curriculum and directions in education are also taken into consideration when planning our programmes.

Theatre is not meant to be simply a high-brow affair for the wealthy and intellectual. It is a language that each of us have the right to learn and speak, in order to find release, and to make meaning of our world.

The Theatre for Seniors Interest Group is proud to present 3 skits on the different dimensions of living and loving.

Be entertained and be part of the post-show dialogue led by Alvin Tan, Artistic Director of The Necessary Stage whose social ideals led to the birth of TFSIG.  Senior Artist, Catherine Sng will co- lead  the discussions.
Each skit will be followed by a short discussion.

Theatre For Seniors Interest Group

Theatre For Seniors Interest Group (TFSIG) is run by seniors for seniors, to nurture the creative talents of seniors, enriching the quality of life and opening up possibilities for seniors.

TFSIG aims to achieve the above-mentioned vision by creating and performing plays and organisting various theatrical programmes through partnership with The Necessary Stage (TNS).

TFSIG will draw from their Encore repertoire whilst creating new works amongst themselves, with guidance from The Necessary Stage and/or from theatre practitioners from the arts community.

TFSIG plans to tour their plays to VWOs, non-profit organisations, underprivileged homes and District Arts Festivals (CDC) to achieve its outreach vision.

Those Who Can't, Teach is a classic of the Necessary Stage, first staged in 1990 as part of the Opening of The Substation. 20 years later, the original creative team of Director Alvin Tan and playwright Haresh Sharma will revisit, revive and revamp the play into a contemporary classic. Set in the backdrop of a secondary school, the play looks at the madcap lives of teachers and students, with often hilarious results. As the teachers struggle daily to 'nurture and groom', the students prefer to hang out and chillax. In the meantime, they all have to deal with the dreaded 'parents'. With upskirting and facebooking, teaching and politicking, school has never been the same. Join the colorful cast of characters as they struggle to prove that Those Who CAN, Teach.

As the teachers struggle daily to nurture and groom, the students prefer to hang out and “chillax”. With upskirting and Facebooking, griping and politicking, school takes on a whole new meaning as the colourful characters struggle to prove that those who can, teach.

Written by Singapore’s most prolific playwright Haresh Sharma, Those Who Can’t, Teach was first staged by The Necessary Stage in 1990 to critical acclaim. Twenty years later, Sharma revisits this classic to revitalise it for the Singapore Arts Festival 2010, transforming it into a powerful portrayal of the pressures and challenges facing teachers (and students) in schools in the 21st century.
