Take Me or Leave Me!

Seniors take centre stage! Join us as we present an afternoon of interactive theatre where you, the audience, get to participate. Two topical issues will be covered in this forum theatre production, The first is divorce amongst seniors. In recent times, more couples are seeking divorces in their old age. Why is this the case? The second is abandonment of the elderly. Why do some families leave their elderly family members at the void deck while they are away to work? How can we help them?

The format of forum theatre includes a performance of the play; followed by audience interaction.

Theatre For Youth and Community 2014

In September 1992, Artistic Director of The Necessary Stage Alvin Tan established the Theatre for Youth Branch, which was later renamed in 2002 as Theatre for Youth and Community (TFYC) Branch.

Since our inception, TFYC has reached to more than 1,000,000 students through school assemblies, interactive Theatre-in-Education programmes, customised workshops and process-based drama programmes. TFYC has also been featured in Esplanade's Feed Your Imagination series as part of the National Arts Council's Arts Excursion Programme, offering high quality, thought-provoking productions that provide students an all-rounded educational theatre experience.

Under the TFYC Branch, we have also embarked on successful partnerships with corporations, non-governmental organisations, statutory boards and government ministries to present works dealing with specific issues to the public.

We believe that theatre must grow out of the community, and therefore pay close attention to issues that concern young people and education. Our programmes are developed from research, detailed planning and consultation because we believe that students can benefit fully through programmes that are relevant to their lives, and which involve theoretical and hands-on learning.

Eclipse

A young Singaporean man is making a journey to his father’s birthplace in Hyderabad, Pakistan. With him are his father’s ashes. As he makes the arduous trip, he retraces the original journey made by millions of people — including his parents and grandparents — in 1947, during the partition of India and Pakistan.

A play that looks at three generations of men struggling with their dreams and their journeys, Eclipse is an intimate look at personal stories affected by historical events.

First staged to critical acclaim as a short play by Scotland’s 7:84 Theatre at Traverse Theatre, Eclipse was developed into a full-length production and presented in Singapore as a Fringe Highlight of the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2008.

Best Of

A young Malay-Muslim woman describes a day in her life – starting with a visit to the prison in the morning to see her cousin, and ending at the hospital to be with her mother who is undergoing chemotherapy. She shares her most immediate concerns, such as trying to settle a divorce with her husband through the Syariah laws in Singapore.

Best Of, although specific in its issues – grappling with divorce matters in Singapore's Muslim community – broaches more universal themes. It appeals to anyone regardless of identity markers such as race, class, gender and faith.

From the kindness of strangers to the staleness of familiarity, the protagonist reveals, through her encounters in this one day, the worst of and the best of, the people around us.

Theatre director Alvin Tan needs no introduction. The founding artistic director of The Necessary Stage (TNS), his works are known for their sharp social sensibilities and multilayered aesthetics, amongst many others. This issue, we wanted to talk to Alvin about his approach to artistic creations, his views on the audience and the social environment, and how he finds balance in the array of ideologies today, and that we did, over tea and cupcakes.

Forum Theatre Workshop for Seniors

Join us this November 2013 for a 6-session introductory course into Forum Theatre, conducted by The Necessary Stage’s Founder and Artistic Director, Alvin Tan!  Learn about, create and facilitate a Forum Theatre piece together with your fellow participants.

Created by Augusto Boal, the form empowers the audience member to personally enact changes they would like to see in the presented performance. The form creates a safe space where audiences can test out solutions they think will help resolve the problems presented on stage. You can find out more information about Forum Theatre with a quick Google search, or even at your nearest public libraries!
