Glocalqueering in New Asia

This essay considers the theatrical production of Asian Boys Vol. 1 in Singapore as it is imbricated in neoliberal, nationalist, and diasporic circuits using a new critical formulation called "glocalqueering." Arguing that the global queering lens is inadequate in understanding the predicament of queer men in global cities like Singapore, the article turns to the play as an example of a queer and trans/national theatre production that unravels the politics of performing gay in Singapore and/as New Asia. While uncovering the glocalqueering circuits of this production, the essay also examines the effectiveness of using global Asian queer boys in the hyper-consumerist and highly regulated context of Singapore for queer self-representation, visibility, and political intervention by sexual minorities.

Creative Communication Programme

This workshop aims to help students free themselves to explore the potential of using their voice nd body in communicating effectively for public speaking, and to help them source and structure their content creatively. It will give students many opportunities to present both spontaneous and prepared talks, and other shorter presentations, ranging from one to five minutes, exploring a range of styles of presentation.

Students will explore awareness, expression and relaxation of Body and Voice, structuring content, and discover what makes for an interesting presentation. They will become more aware of their strengths and weaknesses of their own natural communication and presentation styles. They can expect to discover an appreciation for their own personal communication style as they create a range of presentations based on their personal interests.

What's the difference?

Three friends of three different races decide to combine Chinese New Year, Hari Raya and Deepavali all into one festival and celebrate them all together.

"We will call it New Raya Deepavali! Or Hari Chinese Deepavali! Or Deepavali Raya Year!"

First they go through the process of sharing with each other their customs and then they decide to start visiting each other's families to share in their customs.

As they bring their friends to their homes, they soon discover what their culture's have in common but also realise the divides that have been built up between the different races over time. They discover their parents' own racial and cultural prejudice and they even manage to discover some of its roots, including Singapore's racial riots, and the Japanese occupation.

Brought back by demand this play first toured Singapore schools in 2001, 'What's The Difference?' has proven to be a wonderful way to open discussion about racial and cultural harmony as it explores difficult questions through the innocence and honesty of a child's eyes. The play is filled with colourful and endearing characters and stories inspired by real life historical accounts of Singapore's history.

Discovering the island, War and Racial Riots, Colonization, Adventure, Loyalty and betrayal, crossing and negotiating language and culture.

It will be told through the eyes of a present-day student who discovers the many different voices of history as he meets them in person. This is a delightful introduction to young audiences to theatre and to the rich history of our island. It promises to be lots of fun and to really get students hooked to read and think more about their heritage.

Jason is down on himself because he does badly in school and takes so long to do his homework while his friends seem to be able to do it with ease, and have lots of extra time for recreation. His mother always tells him he is stupid and he has started to believe it.

Anita loves sinnging but cannot make it into the school choir but she is great with her schoolwork.

Anita decides to help Jason with his homework, and Jason helps her with her singing.

Peng Chye is a shy student in school who has no friends, as he sticks to himself. To others he is a mystery. One day someone decides to follow him to see how he spends his time, only to find out he daily goes to help a lonely old woman.
