Child's Play

Three families have to make a difficult choice: should they allow their children to go through a clinical trial?
Kris struggles to decide if putting her son through tests on a new drug might cause him more distress. Luther opposes compulsory clinical trials on principle, but is also aware these can save lives. Johari wonders if he should sign his children up for these trials to supplement the family’s income.

Should children take part in clinical trials? Should they have a say? Are they old enough to decide?

The Necessary Stage tackles these questions and more in Child’s Play, an exciting and thought-provoking performance that explores the ethical issues surrounding the use of child subjects in clinical trials.

Helmed by Cultural Medallion recipients Alvin Tan and Haresh Sharma of The Necessary Stage, Ghost Writer offers a glimpse into the lives of characters intertwined by blood and ties that bind—and suffocate.

A young dancer who has undergone traditional training feels dislocated within her artistic practice in her home country. A new expatriate wife detached from her immediate reality draws inspiration from the writings of strangers past and present, and tries to reinvent herself. A teacher seeks to save a school that she had inherited, but finds her quest leaves her more lonely than ever.

A meditative interdisciplinary production that charts the collisions of people seeking to alter their destinies, Ghost Writer grapples with the question of how independent our lives can be. Are we existing based on other people's terms, or can we transcend tradition and memory to rewrite our own stories?

Dramaturgy in Action II

This panel was the first event on the second day of the Asian Dramaturgs' Network Symposium 2016. In this panel, the speakers discuss the dramaturgical challenges of less-than-conventional productions. Charlene Rajendran, Ken Takiguchi, and Kok Heng Leun share their experiences with the dramaturgy of artistic collaborations across national, cultural and/or disciplinary boundaries. Alvin Tan shares how dramaturgy is integrated into the theatre-making methodology of The Necessary Stage, citing a transnational collaborative project as an example.

The Orange Playground Lab #1

A workshop conducted by Suguru Yamamoto of Hanchu-Yuei.

Suguru will guide the participants to a heightened awareness through focusing on the two main types of “places” in theatre:
• The place where it is performed (space)
• The place it is set in the script (scene)

With their sensibilities focused on these two “places”, participants will be able to discover new vocabularies in sincere acting and body movement. Everyone would have had an experience in which our feelings changed when the place altered, or a sense that somehow a certain place never works for us. We hope to lead participants to a greater realisation of the uniqueness of locality and the powerful influence of place in our everyday lives.

The Orange Playground Lab #4

Created by Artistic Director Alvin Tan, The Orange Playground (TOP) is The Necessary Stage’s newest initiative in creative research and development. We seek to collaborate with artists in an exploratory environment where risks can be freely taken within and with the creative process. TOP will provide opportunities for free, ad-hoc collaborative “jamming” and play with emerging and established talents.

This Lab focused on the exchange of devising methodologies employed by David Glass and The Necessary Stage. The artists centred their explorations around In Order to Live by Yeonmi Park.
