Signs of Fire Camp

Calling all drama enthusiasts from secondary schools in Singapore. Join The Esplanade and The Necessary Stage as they bring for the first time, a 5 day drama camp held at the Esplanade Theatres on the Bay. Helmed artistically by Natalie Hennedige, full-time artist with TNS, Signs of Fire is the theme of the cam as fire represents passion, desire, energy; words often associated with young people, and should be symbolic of the participants' attitudes towards drama and the arts. The camp aims to provide students with a passion in drama the opportunity to investigate the key elements and tools of drama and performance within the creative arts. Other art forms such as visual art, movement/dance, puppetry and story-telling will be moven into the workshops conducted at the camp. Ultimately, the camp hopes to excite students in their performance-making and long-term interest in the arts.

Theatre For Youth Ensemble

The Theatre for Youth Ensemble (TFYE) is presented by The Necessary Stage, one of the flagship theatre companies in Singapore, and a leader in drama programmes for young people. TFYE seeks to nurture and train a group of fifteen, 15-20 year olds from South East Singapore who have the potential, and love for drama, especially in performance and theatre making.

This is a year-long programme offering hands-on training mainly in performance as well as other aspects of theatre such as production, directing, writing, design and arts administration, conducted by professional arts practitioners from The Necessary Stage.

Throughout the programme, participants will have opportunities to share their works with a public audience and they will also be featured in M1 Youth Connection (Singapore’s only annual festival of theatre and other arts for young people presented by The Necessary Stage).

untitled cow number one

untitled cow number one is about the journey of a widowed cow. The play, which is divided into 12 sections and cover 12 days of mourning, is strongly influenced by Hindu and Buddhist texts, images and myths. References are made to Krishna and Shiva, excerpts from the Dhammapada - The Sayings of Buddha - are read; and rituals are performed in this 30-minute play. The monodrama also features viewpoints of other characters. A friend tries to get the cow to move away from her husband's rotting body; the cow's child cires because of mother's lack of attention. In the end, the cow has an outburst, where she accuses the gods and at the same time begs them for help and direction. and with her final lines, another quotation from the Dhammapada, she finally moves on: "I want nothing from this world. And nothing from the next. I am free".

untitled women number one

In untitled women number one, two women who are absolutely still throughout the play, talk about their relationships, their past and future. A highly exploratory play, the text is very opaque - the audience is given snatches of conversations/dialogue with long moments of silence in between. The dialogue makes no obvious reference to the two women's relationship. The audience is left to decide whether the actors are playing a range of characters, or just one character; whether time is moving forwards or backwards. The actors go through a rollercoaster of emotions - one minute they could be shouting and in pain, and the next they are serene, and the very next they are crying. Yet, throughout, they do not move at all. The text makes references to gender, quoting stories about women and talking about sexuality, but ultimately the play transcends its very title in its portrayal of pain, death and interdependence.

Discover how Drama and other integrated Arts discipline can be used in Education, to empower students to be more pro-active learners.

Simon Sharkey and his team at Cumbernauld Theatre are breaking new ground in Scotland schools, working with Drama, Dance, Multimedia, Animation, Make-up and Music as tools for tapping hidden potential and untapped intelligence even with the most disengaged youths.Arts For Life And Learning

Simon will share principles, strategies and techniques in his Educational work, and in particular, examples and ideas from the recent collaboration between Cumbernauld Theatre and The Necessary Stage - Fires Within Fires. In this project, students in Singapore and Scotland experienced a dynamic learning process, exploring life issues and utilising and developing multiple intelligences, through an exploration of the ideas and issues in Arthur Miller's text, The Crucible.

This will be a practical and participatory workshop, conducted with hands-on arts activities, discussions, and presentations from Simon.

Mounds a performance installation, is a piece that moves about and halts at 8 spots in The Heeren. The artist begins at each spot by building a little soil mound, which is then adorned with flowers that bear significance to desires and fears. An interactive piece which attempts to pull in participants, these mounds are not complete and the performance by the aritst carries on, until someone, somewhere in the crowd of shoppers/spectators offers a response to them. The installation is complete and free for all to view once the mounds are lade with the thoughts and emotions of the crowds at The Heeren Shops.
